The Associated Press reports that a car collided with a school bus in Frankton, Indiana on Wednesday morning as the children were being transported to school. The accident occurred when a car lost control on the icy roads and could not stop before slamming into the bus and causing it to tip onto its side in a field adjacent to the road.
There were roughly 60 students on the bus, all attending the Frankton Junior-Senior High School. Although dozens were injured and many needed medical attention, none received life-threatening injuries.
All were evacuated safely through the roof's emergency hatch by the driver of the car and with the help of uninjured students. The accident took place on a small road 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
"We're just thankful right now that it doesn't appear that we have anything very serious as far as injuries," Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said.
One boy required plastic surgery for cuts on his face while another boy broke his collarbone. Both were treated at Community Hospital along with 25 other students. Another 21 students were transported to other local hospitals with minor injuries from the crash. The injuries were mainly caused by the students toppling onto one another when the bus tipped over, as buses are not required to have seat belts.
"I was in the back on an inside seat, so everyone ended up on top of me," Josh Derrickson, a high school junior, said in a phone interview from the scene with the Herald Bulletin in Anderson, In
The adverse weather conditions were also responsible for a number of other school bus incidents in Indiana of lesser degrees. One bus slid into a fence in a school parking lot, while a number of other buses slid off the road in the surrounding area. A significant number of other snow and ice related accidents claimed the lives of five in Indiana just this week.
