Good Samaritan Hit By Big Rig On I-465 Outside Of Indianapolis

Posted on Sep 30, 2011

Indiana State Police say that a fatal truck accident on Interstate 465 South was caused by driver inattention or driver distraction – and that the truck driver who caused the accident had not kept a log of his driving hours as is required by federal trucking regulations.

The Indiana truck accident took place just before midnight on Wednesday when two men pulled their pickup truck onto the shoulder of I-465 near the intersection of I-76 outside of Indianapolis. The pair, which including 32-year-old Greg Lacey, stopped to help 31-year-old Kymari Sue Cobel and 21-year-old Zachary Wright, whose vehicle had suffered a flat tire.

All four people were outside of the disabled car when big rig driver 58-year-old Paul Morris drifted into the shoulder and struck the group. Three out of four pedestrians were struck by the tractor-trailer. One of the Good Samaritans was killed while Wright and Lacey were treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Lacey told police that the trucker, who was on his cell phone in the moments after the crash, told them that they shouldn’t have been on the road.

Police are investigating the truck accident, but already know that they don’t know how long the trucker had been on the road at the time of the crash. Criminal charges related to negligence are possible.

The Indianapolis car accident attorneys at Keller & Keller LLP send their thoughts and best wishes to the family of the Good Samaritan who gave his life while trying to help others.
