An off-duty Greenfield Police officer was killed by an unknown driver while riding his bike on a rural Indiana road last night. Police are searching for the driver who struck the man, who left the scene of the fatal accident without stopping.
The town of Greenfield, located in central Illinois, is morning the loss of 32-ear-old Officer William Phillips, who was exercising on his bike with two other cyclists and fellow members of the police department at the time of the hit-and-run accident. The officers’ biking team had every piece of safety equipment recommended for cycling at night, including helmets, reflective clothing, and blinking red lights on the back of their bikes. Phillips was struck from behind on the four-lane highway near the Hancock-Henry county line.
The officers, who were in training, were riding from Greenfield to Knightstown that night and often went on bike rides when they got off of their shift at 10 PM. Phillips leaves behind a wife, Lesley and two sons, 5-year-old Gavin and 2-year-old Bryson.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward. They say that they are looking for a Toyota with a broken headlight and front body damage, but don’t have information on the year, model, or color of the car that struck their fellow officer. The investigating officers are trying to determine if any laws were broken leading up to the fatal cyclist accident.
