West Lafayette resident Ann Taylor knows the ways of insurance companies all too well. Ms. Taylor suffered a herniated disc when she was involved in a crash with no less than a State Farm worker in a company car. After incurring roughly $15,000 in expenses, she was able to recover just $3,500.
Over the past 10 years, CNN discovered, between 80 and 90 percent of victims of minor accidents back down, letting the insurance company off the hook. Victims who have incurred thousands of dollars in expenses often receive settlements of only $50 or $100.
The investigation was the result of 1 ½ years of investigation that included reviewing 6,000 documents and conducting interviews with more than 25 people, including customers and veterans of the insurance game.
