This week in Indiana the US Postal Service is celebrating National Dog Bite Prevention Week, a week of prevention and awareness of dog attacks, both for postal workers and all people. Unfortunately, dogs attack postal workers and mail carriers almost 2,900 each year and in Indiana alone 60 mailmen were injured by dogs while on the job. In addition to mail carriers being bitten by aggressive dogs, thousands of residents around Indiana are attacked each year, the majority of which are small children and the elderly.
How can you help prevent mail carriers in Indiana from being bitten by your dog?
• Make sure that your mailman has a safe way to deliver the mail if you have a fenced yard and loose dog. Bring your dog inside or leash him if a mail carrier enters your yard during the day.
• Don’t let your children take mail from a mail carrier – approaching a child might seem like a threat to a family dog.
• Make sure your mail carrier knows about your pet and is comfortable around the animal.
• Train your dog to obey commands – and to recognize the mail carrier as a friendly presence. If your dog can sit and stay, it is less likely to attack a mail carrier if you are present.
• Spay or neuter your dog – fixed pets are much less aggressive and are less likely to attack anyone.
• Understand that you are responsible for your dog’s actions and that you should be in control of your pet.
