I-69 pile up leaves 3 dead including two local men

Posted on Feb 04, 2009

A sudden, unexpected storm blanketed the Madison County area with as much as 4 inches of snow Tuesday morning, January 3, 2009, causing dozens of traffic accidents including a 34-vehicle pileup that left two Anderson residents dead.

Dustin Goettman, 27, and Ryan A. Phillips, 28, both of Anderson, died in the 34-car accident, who were in the same truck. Several others suffered less-severe injuries in the chain-reaction crash, which involved nine semitrailers and a fire truck. A third person in an SUV was initially hospitalized in critical condition but later died. That person’s identity was not immediately released.

The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. two miles south of the Indiana 238 exit in Hamilton County and about eight miles north of I-465. Police said that "near whiteout conditions existed at the time of the crash due to blowing snow." The accident occurred when a firetruck responding to an earlier crash was rear-ended by another vehicle, setting off a chain-reaction crash.

"Some motorists were driving too fast for the weather conditions and too close to other."

UPDATE:
A third victim of the Interstate 69 crash Tuesday morning that killed two Anderson men has been identified — and is still alive, contrary to an Indiana State Police press release issued Tuesday night

Donald E. Hayden, 61, of Tecumseh, Mich., is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, state police said today.

The Tuesday night press release incorrectly indicated Hayden had also died, but did not reveal his name pending notification of relatives.
