I-74 crash involving semi and 2 cars leaves 1 dead

Posted on Oct 01, 2008

A deadly crash on I-74 involving a semi-truck and two cars has claimed the life of one man and left another critically injured.  The crash occurred at the 97 mile marker near Post Rd.

Charles Neil McCorkhill, 27, of St. Paul, IN, was pronounced dead at Wishard Hospital after he swerved his vehicle into the I-74 median for reasons that have yet to be determined.  After swerving into the median, the car rolled several times coming to rest in the eastbound lanes of I-74.  It was in the eastbound lanes that the rolling vehicle struck another car head on, thus causing both vehicles to collide with an oncoming semi-truck

Mr. McCorkhill was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle.  His passenger, Andrew D. Smith, 28, of Waldron, IN, was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Wishard Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the oncoming vehicle that struck Mr. McCorkhill's vehicle was Darlene A. Nickles, 61, of Shelbyville, IN.  Ms. Nickles was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.  She was airlifted to Methodist Hospital where she is listed as being in critical condition.

The driver of the semitrailer -- Rafael C. Perez, 37, of St. George, Utah -- was not injured.
