Icy conditions cause serious accident with injuries and closes toll road lanes after tanker explodes

BRISTOL — A serious accident on the Toll Road at mile marker 101 had all lanes of traffic shut down after a tanker truck exploded early Tuesday. A semi-truck and pickup truck collided, trapping two people in the pickup. One truck also hit a tanker truck, causing the tanker to explode. One victim was airlifted from the scene.

Hours later, traffic was still at a standstill in both directions because the helicopter was coming back for a second victim burned in the accident.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted at the County Road 17 exit and Westbound motorists were being detoured at Bristol.

The icy conditions also caused a state trooper responding to the accident to crash into a highway maintenance truck also working at the scene. The officer was not injured.
