Illinois Pedestrian Killed By Driver Allegedly Using Facebook

Posted on Mar 18, 2011

Most of us know that texting and driving is dangerous – but now that most Americans have smart phones, using the internet while driving could be a new issue that costs lives.

A recent fatal pedestrian accident in South Chicago is just one example of how using any mobile device while driving can be deadly. In this case, driver Araceli Beas was driving on Ewing Avenue when he struck 70-year-old pedestrian Raymon Veloz, who died shortly after the accident from his extensive injuries. Beas said that the sun was in her eyes at the time of the crash and was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

However, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the daughter of Veloz, Beas had made a Facebook status update just seconds before the collision occurred. In fact, the time of the post, 7:54 a.m. was mere moments before she made a 911 call to report that she had hit someone in the street. In addition, the wrongful death lawsuit states that the woman was not keep a sufficient outlook when the accident took place. In response to the lawsuit, Beas said that she had made the post in her parked car while it was warming up and before she was driving.

Ever since 2009, Illinois has had a law against drivers of any age using a mobile device, such as a cell phone or smart phone, while behind the wheel.
