Illinois Teen Dies In Car Accident Involving Pet Dog

Posted on Jun 26, 2011

One Gurnee teen is dead and another injured after a 15-year-old girl attempted to save her pet dog from being euthanized after a cancer diagnosis.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times and the Daily Herald, high school student Taylor Mae Stinchcomb was extremely upset to hear that her parents were going to put the family dog to sleep after a poor diagnosis. She allegedly stole her parent’s minivan and took the dog from the home. Later, she picked up a friend and had her drive the van. Neither of the girls were old enough to have a driver’s license, though at one had a learner’s permit.

Not long after they departed, the driver, who has not been identified, lost control of the van, ran off the road, and struck several trees. Stinchcomb was killed along with her dog, while her friend suffered minor injuries. While Stinchcomb, a rising sophomore, was reportedly talking to emergency responders at the scene of the car accident as they extracted her from the vehicle, she later died of internal injuries at a local hospital.

The accident occurred after midnight. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the accident, police believe, but speeding could have contributed to the crash.

Two years earlier, the girl and her family had rescued the dog, a Doberman she named Romulus, from a local animal shelter for Stinchcomb’s birthday.
