Indiana Construction Worker Dies In Power Plant Fall

Posted on Jun 11, 2010

A construction worker is dead after a fatal fall at an Indiana power plant. According to the Knox County Sheriff Department and local news channels, the deadly fall accident occurred at the Duke Energy power plant that is under construction in Edwardsport, Indiana. This is the first major on-the-job accident to occur at the new power facility.

The construction worker involved in the fall was 52-year-old John Garrett of Owensville, Indiana. Initial reports claim that Garrett was working on the power plant and about 40 feet in the air when he fell onto the concrete below. Knox County Coroner Don Halter said that the man suffered major chest and head trauma when the scaffolding his was on collapsed underneath him. He was painting the inside of a tank at the time of the Indiana construction site accident.

Duke Energy released a statement voicing that "The company shares the family's grief,” and that "Duke takes safety very seriously." To show just how seriously they take safety, Duke stopped work immediately after the on-the-job construction accident and will hold a mandatory safety meeting tomorrow before allowing employees to return to work. Duke Spokesperson Angeline Protogere also noted that the man was working for a subcontractor, CBNI, at the time of the fatal fall accident.

The construction worker death will be investigated both by state safety authorities and by Duke Energy to determine what caused the accident. Fall accidents are one of the most common types of fatal construction site incidents in Indiana.
