Indiana Construction Worker Killed By Drunk Driver On I-80

Posted on Mar 31, 2010

In a story that is all too familiar for construction workers, a drunk driver plowed down a man filling potholes on Interstate 80 in northwest Indiana last week. Indiana Police say that 45-year-old Christopher Jenkins was working alongside coworker Eugene Pratchett when a drunk driver struck the Jenkins at such a high rate of speed that Jenkins broke through the car’s windshield and landed in the passenger seat of the drunk man’s car.

The man who caused the fatal construction worker accident was 35-year-old Robert Shannon of Calumet City. His license has been suspended four different times in the last decade, the last time for refusing a breathalyzer test. Two cans of beer – one opened – were found in the man’s car after the accident.

In the seconds after the on-the-job construction accident, Shannon fled from the scene of the crime, leaving his car in neutral and headed toward an open lane of I-80 traffic. Pratchett jumped into the car and safely drove it to the shoulder. Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.

Police found Shannon hiding in an alley a few miles from the scene of the accident. He has been charged with reckless homicide and failure to stop at a fatal crash. He has admitted to drinking in the hours before the accident took place and could face up to 16 years in prison if convicted. Shannon suffered minor injuries, including cuts to his face, during the Indiana car accident.

Jenkins leaves behind two children.
