Indiana Logger Killed In Portersville Sawmill Accident

Posted on Oct 05, 2009

An experienced logger with two decades of experience was killed on the job in Portersville, Inidana, on Wednesday afternoon, September 30. The on-the-job fatal Indiana accident took place in Dubois County in southern Illinois.

The Dubois County Sheriff's Department told reporters that no one saw the accident happen at Hoffman Sawmill, though workers who found the body immediately called for emergency help. Officials believe that 70-year-old Norman Keller of Dubois, Indiana, had begun to unload a truckload of logs at the sawmill when one fell off of the truck and onto the man's chest. The log then rolled down his body and off of the worker. Deputy Coroner Bob Brown confirmed that the log had struck the man and then rolled off the lower half of his body.

The Hoffman Sawmill is located north of Jasper and family-owned.

This on-the-job accident is a harsh reminder that no matter how much experience you have logging or working at a sawmill, both work environments are dangerous and often lead to work accidents and work accident injuries. Processing logs involves not only the dangers of logs themselves, but also of the heavy equipment needed to move and cut the pieces. Each year, logging is named one of the nation's most dangerous jobs, with around 80 logging-related deaths recorded each year. Safety experts cite the extreme weight of the wood as the top reason that those working with logs are so often in danger. Overall, logging has a fatality rate of a fatality rate of 90.2 per 100,000.
