Indiana Pit Bull Put To Sleep After Second Attack On Humans In A Year

Posted on Oct 28, 2010

How many humans must a dangerous dog attack before the law says that the animal must be taken from its owner and euthanized? A recent series of dog attacks in La Porte, Indiana, proves that a dog can bite three different people before being taken out of society and stopped from doing harm.

In August, a pit bull named Thor reportedly jumped out a man’s screened window and attacked a father and son who lived in the same apartment building with the pit bull’s owner. According to the Herald-Argus, 55-year-old Michael Knish of Michigan City was knocked down by the dog and bitten several times. His 22-year-old son Matthew, who lives in the building, attempted to stop the dog attack and was also bitten several times by the pit bull.

Both were treated by the hospital, while a La Porte judge ordered the dog’s owner, Adam Gilbert, to keep his dog muzzled, keep him safely on private property, and to keep up to date at the vet.

But just months later the same dog attacked 83-year-old George Cummins, who was taking his trash out at the same apartment building. His dog bite wounds required a number of stitches and the man is still recovering. This time, the La Porte court ordered that Thor spend ten days in quarantine and then is put to sleep for his aggressive and chronically dangerous behavior.  It is unclear if Cummins will pursue a dog bite lawsuit with the dog’s owner.
