High winds with gusts of up to 60 and 70 miles per hour are to blame for an outdoor concert state collapse at the Indiana State Fair this week just minutes before country music duo Sugarland was set to take the stage. Authorities say that five people were killed in the stage collapse while over forty others suffered serious injuries.
Indiana officials say that about 12,000 people were gathering at the concert venue at the fair when the collapse happened, and that several heroes in the crowd helped rescue those who became trapped under pieces of the stage, lighting, and other debris.
After the collapse, many Indiana residents were shocked to find out that no officials had inspected the state before it was used and that stage inspections and permits are not required. In addition, those who erect even large stages in the state are not investigated or checked for a record of safety. At the same time, Indiana law requires that all temporary structures must be able to withstand winds up to 90 miles per hour. State officials say that a stage isn’t a temporary structure, but merely rigging and scaffolding.
The company responsible for the stage and rigging at the Indiana State Fair has no history of similar accidents in the past.
