Muncie Police say that a 13-year-old girl took the wheel when the driver of a car passed out – but was not able to prevent a crash. Now Indiana police are investigating the crash to determine why the woman lost consciousness while driving and what ultimately caused the serious car accident.
According to the Star-Press and other local news sources, the car was driven by a 49-year-old woman and contained four children, ages nine through thirteen. When the woman passed out suddenly, the child in the passenger seat grabbed the wheel and attempted to steer them to safety. However, the car veered out of its lane, hit another car head-on, ran off the road, hit an embankment, and struck the side of a train.
All four of the children as well as the driver were rushed to Indianapolis hospitals in serious condition. The health of the pickup driver that was struck by the car is unknown.
Authorities say that the driver who passed out at the wheel had a number of drugs in her system, including marijuana, cocaine, and prescription painkillers. The group was going to get pizza at the time of the crash. No one has been charged in relation to the crash as of yet.
