Indiana Widower Wants Answers from Hospital about Wife’s Death

Posted on Dec 30, 2011

Three years after his wife died in the Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital emergency room, nationally known bear trainer Jeff Watson is still looking for answers regarding what happened that day and whether the death was caused by a doctor mistake.

Leanne Watson was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and possibly an asthma attack when she arrived at Bloomington Hospital in an ambulance three years ago. However, doctors misdiagnosed the woman with a panic attack and treated her with the drug Ativan. She died seconds after receiving the medication.

Jeff Watson believes that the drug could have reacted with the central nervous system suppressants that his wife took to control her COPD, but two different autopsies of the body came to two different conclusions about the cause of death. The man settled an Indiana medical malpractice lawsuit out of court, but now says that he needs more answers and regrets his decision not to take the hospital and doctor to court.

Now Watson, a Spencer resident, drives around Indiana with a sign on the back of his truck that says, “My wife died begging for air at Bloomington Hospital.” On December 11, he held a rally in front of the hospital demanding more information about the case.

At Keller & Keller LLP, our thoughts are with Watson – and we hope that those who have been harmed by a possible medical error speak with an Indianapolis medical malpractice attorney before settling.
