A Crawfordsville, Indiana, woman is facing two misdemeanor charges related to a dog attack that involved her pet on March 22 of this year.
According to the Crawfordsville Journal-Review and court records, neighbor Verdie Stadler was walking past the home of 30-year-old Moriah Abney when Abney’s boxer, Drake, attacked the woman. The dog allegedly was chained to a concrete block which the dog pulled toward Stadler in order to bite her multiple times.
While Abney claims that the woman was not visibly bleeding or limping after the dog attack, other sources say that Stadler lost significant blood and had several dog bites on her body. Abney also said that two other dogs were also involved in the attack, though court records do not show that that was the case. In addition, Abney has told local reporters that Stadler was kicking the dog and yelling, which likely prompted further dog bites.
Abney has been charged with misdemeanor failure to restrain a dog causing serious bodily injury and misdemeanor harboring a non-immunized dog. Abney believes that her dog was restrained at the time of the attack and says that she immunized the dog herself, though the records of that immunization are in storage. Her dog was taken from her on the day of the attack by animal control officers. It was put to sleep when Abney said she could not afford to get dangerous dog insurance or install a six-foot fence to keep the dog from harming others.
Abney told a reporter that Drake had no history of biting humans, though he did “like to nibble.”
