Indianapolis Hearing Held On I-69 Tanker Truck Explosion

Posted on Aug 08, 2010

The National Transportation Safety Board believes that a number of factors were responsible for the shocking truck tanker explosion that occurred last year on I-69 and I-465 outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. A public hearing on the truck accident, which seriously injured two people and harmed additional others, reviewed the findings of the investigation and proposed new safety measures that could prevent similar IN truck accident to take place in the future.

First, the hearing questioned the safety of the truck’s design. Many believe that the tanker rollover accident could have been prevented if the big rig had a lower center of gravity. One proposal put forth that lowering the tanks on trucks that carry hazardous materials could prevent ten percent of rollover accidents involving toxic chemicals and other dangerous cargo.

Secondly, the public hearing discussed the trucker in the case and the possibility of driver error. The truck driver, 73-year-old Ronald Tobias, said that the 18-wheeler accident occurred when he felt the back of the truck wiggle and he over corrected. However, other witnesses say that the trucker drifted into the left lane, was honked at by a car behind him, and then overcorrected, driving off the right shoulder and rolling his vehicle. One truck accident expert said that almost 80 percent of tanker rollover accident involve some form of trucker error.

Road conditions at the time of the accident as well as the overall health of the driver were also discussed at the Indiana truck accident hearing.
