Indianapolis-based trucking company ordered to pay $1.5 million to crash victims

Posted on Oct 02, 2008

Lawyers for Ronny Martinez, 37, and Kenneth O'neal, 50, have reported that a Texas jury has awarded their clients $1.5 million as the result of a collision with an Indianapolis-based semi-truck

In 2006, the men were traveling on an unnamed highway in Waxahachie, Texas when the truck, operated by Celadon Trucking Services, Inc., veered into their lane and struck them.

The Texas jury award allowed for $750,000 in medical bills for the men, as well as an additional $750,000 for pain and suffering.  The lawsuit claimed that the Indianapolis-based trucking company was negligent in hiring the driver and that  the driver was negligent in his actions which caused the crash.

Steve Russell, the company chairman and CEO for Celadon, stated "Celadon does not hire trainee drivers, and has a very high safety standard relating to its drivers.  We are reviewing the jury verdict, and are considering our options regarding an appeal of the decision."

In 2005, Celadon Trucking agreed to pay $1.25 million to the parents of a soldier who died when his car rear-ended a tractor-trailer that stalled along a Texas highway in 2002 after its brake hose failed.

The husband-wife truck driving team in that case had tried to repair a high-pressure brake hose with a toothpick wrapped with tape.
