INDOT Worker Killed By Dump Truck On I-164 In Evansville

Posted on Apr 14, 2009

An Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) worker was killed on Tuesday, March 24, on Interstate 164 in Evansville, IN, while at a road construction site. According to WFIE Channel 14, 49-year-old Mark Shepherdson of Newburgh, Indiana, was in an INDOT truck on the shoulder of a road construction work zone when an oncoming dump truck hit his vehicle.

The vehicle flipped onto its side, and Shepherdson was rushed by helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center. He later died at the hospital. Although his INDOT truck was equipped to absorb a collision better than most other vehicles, the dump truck was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the work zone crash. The INDOT vehicle was operating a lighted arrow board at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Mack dump truck, 62-year-old William Hurt of Boonville, Indiana, was also brought to the hospital, but only suffered minor injuries.

State authorities urged drivers to slow down and be extra attentive when driving in work zones, especially with large amounts of construction planned across the state of Indiana this coming summer. Indiana State Police released a statement for drivers to slow down, move over, and give workers a chance to work safely.

They also reminded drivers that new laws - on the books since last July - will make sure drivers speeding in work zones or not moving over for workers will receive a hefty fine for their dangerous driving. The Move Over Law could come with a $10,000 traffic citation.
