INDOT Worker Killed In DeMotte Road Construction Accident

Posted on Jun 27, 2011

The Indiana Department of Transportation has released a statement confirming that one of their employees was struck and killed by a truck while working at a road construction site in DeMotte this week.

According to the Post-Tribune, 54-year-old Tony Northcutt of Rensselaer was sealing cracks in the road at the intersection of Jasper County Road 1400N and U.S. 231. At the same time, 50-year-old truck driver Michael Hatch was covering the hot sealant with sand as the crew worked. During this process, Hatch told authorities that he did not see anyone in his rearview mirrors and accidently backed into Northcutt with his vehicle.

Northcutt was rushed to Franciscan Saint Anthony Crown Point for treatment, but died of his construction accident injuries. The County coroner’s office later found that the man had died of blunt force trauma.

The fatal road construction worker accident will be investigated by the Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Transportation, and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

IDOT released a statement extending their deepest sympathies to the family of the lost worker and sharing their concern over how the accident took place and how they can keep the rest of their employees safe from similar incidents.
