LaPorte County Pedestrian Killed By Two Hit-And-Run Accidents

Posted on Jul 14, 2009

Two different cars struck the same pedestrian and then left the scene of the accident on Highway 2o in LaPorte County last Saturday, according to the Michigan City Police Department. A 25-year-old Chicago man, Christopher M. Chiles, was walking near the eastbound passing lane of the road a few minutes after three in the morning when a car hit the pedestrian and then continued driving.

The first car that hit Chiles was driven by 45-year-old Daniele L. Waters, who 20 minutes later called the police to report that her car had been stolen from her. After further interview, Waters admitted that she had not been carjacked and that she had been driving the vehicle at the time it struck the pedestrian. Her blood alcohol level was just under the legal limit.

After the first car accident, Chiles was lying on the centerline between lanes when a passing vehicle stopped to save the injured pedestrian. He parked on the side of the road, directed his headlights on the body, and went to seek further help. However, a pickup truck sped around the witness' vehicle and ran over Chiles again before speeding into the distance. The witness told the LaPorte County Sheriff's Police that the man was still breathing after the first car hit.

Waters has been charged in relation to the hit and run accident, but investigators are still searching for the driver of the pickup truck. Chiles was pronounced dead at St. Anthony Memorial Health Center in Michigan City.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-runs, especially about the driver of the Silverado, is asked to call Detective Mark Lachmund at the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office, at 326-7700, Ext. 2401.
