Lawrenceville father and son injured in I-70 rollover

Posted on Feb 04, 2009

Harold Benson, 81, and his son, Bradley H. Benson, 60, both of Lawrenceville, Ill., were seriously injured in the crash of a sport-utility truck Tuesday morning, February 3, 2009, on Interstate 70 in Clay County.

The Bensons were passengers in a Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Jeanne Brinkman, 68, of Lawrenceville. The eastbound vehicle was passing a tractor trailer when it went out of control, traveled into the median, rolled over and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

Bradley Benson was listed in serious condition in Terre Haute Regional Hospital late Tuesday with head injuries.

Harold Benson was ejected from the vehicle onto the westbound lanes of the highway and suffered a fractured leg, head and facial injuries. Passersby stopped traffic and prevented him from being struck. He was transferred from Regional Hospital to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Brinkman also was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, but was not listed as a patient there later Tuesday. She was wearing a seat belt while the Bensons were not restrained, police reported.
