Loose tire bounces over median, strikes car, fatally injures Lincoln Park woman

DEARBORN - A loose tire struck and killed a 54-year-old Vanessa Ford of Lincoln Park about 1:15 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, when it crashed through her windshield on the Southfield Freeway in Dearborn.

The victim was traveling southbound in a 1994 Ford Probe when the tire dislodged from a 1997 Dodge pickup heading northbound. The tire then bounced over the concrete divider and struck the southbound vehicle in the driver's side windshield.

Ford sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Oakwood Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. No charges had been filed against the other driver, a 19-year-old man from Northville.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident. The crash is still under investigation.
