Man airlifted from vehicle crash with serious injuries

Thorncreek Township firefighters and Whitley County medics worked to free the driver of a car struck broadside by a minivan Saturday.
Thomas H. Roberts Jr., 32, of Fort Wayne man was airlifted with serious injuries from the scene of a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning, January 17, 2009, in Whitley County where alcohol may have been a factor.
Roberts was northbound on state Route 9 when he tried to turn west onto a county road and crossed in front of an oncoming Ford minivan driven by Todd A. Coyle, 41, a Columbia City resident. The van hit the passenger’s side of Roberts’ car broadside and spun it at least once.
Both vehicles came to rest south of the intersection with county Road 400 North where the impact occurred. State police at the scene said Roberts’ car was completely across the southbound lanes at the time of impact.
Roberts was flown by Samaritan to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with head and internal injuries.
Coyle and the two other people in his car were not injured.
