Man Killed In Livingston County Construction Accident Involving Concrete

Posted on Sep 20, 2009

A Howell Township, Michigan, construction site accident left one man dead last week. The Livingston County Sheriff Department reported that 61-year-old Richard Browand was killed a few minutes before eight in the morning between Grand River and Byron Road on M-59. The fatal MI construction site accident took place about 45 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The man, a truck driver working for Mack Transport Inc., was helping to unload concrete slabs from his truck at the construction site when a piece of concrete fell off of the truck and onto Browand, killing him. He was rushed by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to St. Joseph Livingston Hospital where health professionals pronounced him dead at just after 8:30 am. The Livingston County Medical Examiner officially pronounced the construction worker dead.

The panel of concrete weighed 3,500 pounds, leaving the man with fatal blunt force trauma injuries. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the concrete slabs are being utilized by workers to build a sound barrier wall along the eastbound side of M-59. The primary contractor for the job is Walter Toebe Construction in Wixom, Michigan.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is still investigating the Livingston County construction site accident, as is the Sheriff Department.
