May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Posted on May 09, 2009

As part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Indiana Department of Transportation is urging motorcycle riders and drivers a like to keep motorcycle safety in mind as warmer weather approaches and many bike enthusiasts hit the road this summer.

What makes riding a motorcycle more dangerous than driving another vehicle? Motorcycles are smaller and therefore harder to see on the roads - drivers have been know to switch lanes into motorcycles, merge into motorcycles, or cut motorcycles off simply because they didn't know they were there. Motorcycles are also harder to maneuver, especially on rough pavement or inclement weather. Finally, because motorcycles lack many of the safety features of other vehicles, such as roll bars, airbags, and slide control, it is much easier to suffer serious or fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash.

Cars can help prevent motorcycle accidents by checking their blind spots, being aware of bikes on the road, being attentive while making left turns, and leaving an appropriate amount of space between your vehicle and a motorcycle. Motorcycles can keep the roads safe by wearing a helmet and protective clothing, by obeying the rules of the road, by following cars at a safe distance, and by understanding how to best approach rough patches of road and other motorcycle hazards.
