A serious Michigan ATV accident ends the 2010 Olympic hopes of one world-class snowboarder.
Danny Davis was driving an all-terrain vehicle in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 17, when his ATV ran into a closed gate at the end of a private drive. The Michigan native was found unconscious and transported to the hospital, where surgeons operated on his pelvis and spine. He is now listed in serious but stable condition, recovering from a fractured hip and vertebrae.
Davis and a friend had been celebrating a snowboarding victory that occurred on Saturday night when the accident occurred. Police did not know whether alcohol was a factor in the 3:30 am ATV crash. Friends say that the ATV hit the gate and that Davis was thrown from the vehicle and suffered leg and back injuries. Authorities are not sure who was driving at the time of the accident.
Davis won a qualifying event for the 2010 United States Olympic snowboarding half-pipe team on January 6 even though he was not a favorite – one of five qualifying snowboarding events for the Olympics. At the time of his win, the athlete dedicated his victory to Ken Pearce, a fellow snowboarder who had suffered a serious brain injury less than a moth before while snowboarding.
While the promising snowboarder is expected to make a full recovery from his accident, his future in the sport he loves is still not known. The 2010 snowboarding team was announced on Saturday night, with neither Davis nor Pearce on the roster.
