Moped struck by car leaving Two teens seriously injured in US 6 crash; car driver charged with OWI

Posted on Dec 22, 2008

A Valparaiso motorist has been charged with operating while intoxicated after the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said that he rear ended a moped on U.S. Highway 6 in Liberty Township

Aaron Casko, 15, was eastbound on U.S. 6, west of C.R. 200W, with his brother, Adam Casko, 17, his passenger, on a moped when a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Nichole Moore, 27, rear ended them. Adam Casko was not wearing a helmet and was ejected from the moped and struck Moore’s windshield, then was thrown onto the roadway. Aaron Casko, who was wearing a helmet, was also ejected from the moped, landing on the south side of the roadway in a ditch.

Police said that while lying in the westbound lane of U.S. 6 Adam Casko may have been additionally struck in the lower legs by a Buick Regal westbound on U.S. 6 and driven by Elaine Lucas, 56, of Portage.

Both Adam and Aaron Casko were transported to Porter hospital for treatment of head injuries but Adam was subsequently transferred to Christ Hospital in Illinois due to the severity of his injuries.

Moore was found to be impaired, police said, and has been charged with four counts of OWI: OWI-prior, a Class D felony; OWI-causing serious bodily injury, a Class C felony; OWI with a blood alcohol content above .08 percent and less than .15 percent; and simple OWI, a Class A misdemeanor.

Lucas, the driver of the westbound vehicle, was not injured and not impaired at the time of the accident, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
