Mother, 2-year-old son killed in I-70 crash

Posted on Feb 17, 2009

A mother and her 2-year-old son were killed Sunday, Feburary 15, 2009, in a head-on collision on I-70 in Hancock County.

Crysten Butler, 25, Carthage, was driving an Acura Legend in the westbound lane about 1 p.m. when she veered across the median to the eastbound lane about six miles east of the Greenfield exit.

Butler's car rammed into an oncoming Cadillac driven by Randy Guthridge of Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Acura bounced off the Cadillac into the shoulder lane, where it was hit by a semitrailer truck driven by Jon Nelson of Hot Springs, Ark.

The truck pushed Butler's car along the guardrail for about 40 feet before it fell 10 feet into a drainage ditch.

Butler's son, Jason Jett Williams, who was in a booster seat in the back seat, was killed. The impact sent the 2-year-old's seat flying out of the car. It also tore in half the seat belt Butler was wearing. The mother and son were pronounced dead on the scene.

Guthridge was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. Nelson complained of pain in his arms and was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital.

Investigators do not know why Butler drove off the road but said none of the drivers was suspected of using alcohol or drugs, that the road was straight and the weather and road conditions were clear and dry. Investigators also indicate that there were no skid marks or gouge marks in the grass that indicated she slowed down and that there was some indication that she was driving faster than the speed limit.
