Mother and daughter killed while walking along 56th Street

Jenine Jackson, 28, and Brionna Butler, 5, were hit by a car driven by a 22-year-old who did not see them as they walked near the intersection of 56th Street and Georgetown Road in Indianapolis. Brionna died instantly. Her mother was rushed to Methodist Hospital, where she died late Tuesday night.

Police said they think Jackson and her daughter had picked up some food at a restaurant nearby and were walking home. Wet roads and low lighting in the area may have contributed to the crash. They think the driver might not have seen the pair and accidentally hit them.

"There's no crosswalk. It is dimly lit," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "It's kind of hard to see in this area, in addition to the atmospheric conditions."

Police said they don't think alcohol or speed was involved. Charges are not expected to be filed against the 22-year-old driver of the car.
