Muncie, Indiana, Man Found Dead In Home Killed By Pit Bull Attack

Posted on Nov 18, 2008

Sixty-two-year-old senior Chester R. Jordon of Muncie, Indiana was killed by three pit bulls belonging to his own family on October 31. Indiana Police found the man dead in a horrific scene of carnage in the basement of his home, with signs that the victim had fought for his life. Initial reports said that the dogs contributed to the death of the man, but that there may have been other factors at play, such as a possible heart attack.

The boyfriend of Jordan's daughter discovered the body, which was where the man lived along with three adult pit bulls and six new pit bull puppies. It is possible that the pit bulls were protecting their young. The man was seen alive by his daughter when she left the house the morning he was found.

Indiana imposes strict liability on not only the owner, but also the possessor, keeper or harborer of the dog, but they are strictly liable only if the victim is a mail deliverer or other official. In this case, the victim was the owner of the dogs.

UPI.com reports that the autopsy revealed that the victim had evidence of earlier bites on his body - suggesting that he had been attacked by his own dogs before the fatal mauling took place. The investigation also revealed that the man had suffered from dementia, according to the Muncie Star Press.

In addition, police reported that the dogs were not trained to attack and that there was no proof or evidence that Jordon had provoked the pit bulls in any way.

The fact that the man had older bites on his body according to reports by the Delaware County Coroners Office, however, worries Indiana authorities about whether or not the man, who suffered from mental issues, was neglected by his family and caretakers.

"We're going to make sure he wasn't neglected," said police Lt. Al Williams. "The concerns we have are the living conditions."

The nine dogs were removed from the home by animal control officers, who will hold the dogs for ten days for observation. After observation, the dogs could be euthenized.
