New Mexico Worker Electrocuted When Crane Boom Hits Power Lines

Posted on Feb 26, 2010

A New Mexico worker was seriously injured this month after the crane boom he was operating struck high voltage power lines. The electrocution accident will be fully investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine what caused the on-the-job accident and who was at fault.

Reports say that the accident occurred on a Las Crues, New Mexico, construction site on Monday, February 8, 2010, at a quarter before four in the afternoon. The construction accident injury victim Moises Rios was reportedly backing away from the crane truck when the vehicle came into contact with power lines and electrocuted Rios. Emergency workers quickly arrived at the scene of the worker accident and treated Rios for his injury at the scene before rushing him to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

The Alamogordo Department of Public Safety (ADPS) reported that Rios was an employee of Sol Contractor of El Paso, a subcontractor at the work site. Workers were constructing the Otero Federal Credit Union building at 10th Street and Cuba Avenue in Alamogordo.

Alamogordo fire fighters arrived at the scene of the electrical accident in order to put out a small fire on the crane that had started after contact with the power lines. Traffic on the road where the construction accident took place was stopped for a half-hour as emergency workers stabilized the situation.
