Ninety File Injury Claims Following Indiana State Fair Stage Collapse

Posted on Nov 21, 2011

The Indianapolis Star and the Associated Press have reported that ninety people have filed personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death lawsuits against the State of Indiana following the deadly stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair in August.

No one is sure of how the state will handle the dozens of lawsuits, especially considering that Indiana law states that no more than $5 million can be paid out for one accident and that an accident victim can receive no more than $700,000 in compensation. With seven people dead from the accident and a significant number more seriously injured, it is unclear how everyone will get their fair share.

A charity that collected donations in the wake of the deadly stage accident has reported that is has distributed $500,000 to accident victims and has less than $500,000 left to give.

The stage collapse took place just before the band Sugarland put on a concert at the Indiana State Fair on August 13. Authorities say that strong gusts of wind caused the structure to blow over onto the audience. Few regulations exist to control the safety of concert stages, and investigations have been launched to evaluate the liability of the stage maker and the band.
