Numbers Increasing For Those Seeking Disability Benefits

Posted on Sep 23, 2009

The number of people in America seeking disability benefits is rising, according to a recent study conducted by the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA). In fact, the study, called the 2008 Long-Term Disability Claims Review, found that the number of workers seeking long-term disability benefits is increasing significantly due to two major factors.

The CDA's four yearly review on long-term disability found that the Social Security Administration's Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program saw a 5.9 percent increase in applications - the greatest amount ever recorded. A total of 2.3 million more SSDI applicants than last year. All in all, the SSA paid $91.3 billion in disability benefits to 7.4 million people in 2008. The number is more than double what the SSA paid out to the disabled in 1998 and 4.6 percent more than what they paid in 2008.

What is causing this surge in disability payments? The study revealed the back pain, joint pain, and muscle disorders were the most common cause of disability applications, with cancer and heart disease following behind. Some believe that the current economic crisis may have harmed the health of some, while others think that a significant factor in the increase is the aging population of baby boomers. In the end, the SSA as well as private insurers hope that there will be more time spend on education and prevention in order to curb these numbers.
