Off-Duty Roseland Deputy Marshall Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash

SOUTH BEND — St. Joseph County authorities have arrested the driver involved in an accident Saturday, November 1, 2008, that killed Roseland Deputy Town Marshall Craig Toner. Alexander Orta, 26, of South Bend, was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death and for Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash, both Class C felonies, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
About 4 p.m., A sports utility utility vehicle driven by Orta crossed the centerline crashing into Toner who was driving a motorcycle on Ironwood Drive near Rockne Drive. Toner landed on the hood of the vehicle then fell to the ground. A witness told authorities that after getting out of his SUV and surveying the scene, Orta got back into his vehicle and ran over Toner.
Authorities reported that Orta then crashed his vehicle about a half mile from the scene.
Toner, who was off-duty, was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital. The St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigated the crash.
