One college student has been killed and another seriously injured in a freak accident at a seminary in Fort Wayne in which a tree fell on a couple using a hammock.
According to multiple Indiana news sources, 21-year-old Jeremy Mohr and 18-year-old Mallorie Kastner were walking together near Lake Winona when they spotted a hammock hanging between two trees. However, when the sat down in the hammock, one of the trees fell on to the couple with tragic results. Kastner was killed by blunt force trauma while Mohr was seriously injured by the falling tree. Kastner was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by emergency responders.
Mohr remains on a ventilator at a Fort Wayne hospital, though friends and family say that he is able to move his head and shoulders. His family is planning a benefit at their hometown church in order to help with medical costs associated with his spinal cord injury following the accident.
An early investigation by Indiana police has revealed that the tree that fell had a rotten trunk. It is unclear if the families of either of the students will file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit in the wake of the accident.
Both injury victims were students at Grace College and Theological Seminary. Kastner, who was a freshman at the school, was from Wabash, Indiana.
