One Killed, Two Injured In Indiana Worker Accident At Green Tech

Posted on Dec 31, 2010

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) and South Bend Fire Department officials will both investigate a fatal worker accident that took place in South Bend, Indiana, on Green Tech Drive this week. One worker was killed in the industrial accident while two others suffered serious injuries.

According to the South Bend Tribune, 49-year-old diesel mechanic Jonathan Atkinson was killed a the Green Tech Transfer and Recycling Station as he was attempting to weld handles onto a 75-gallon fuel tank at the facility. An initial investigation by the South Bend Fire Department shows that flammable residue on the inside of the fuel tank ignited because of the heat produced by the worker’s welder, causing an explosion.

Atkinson was rushed to the hospital following the explosion, but he died of his on-the-job injuries. An autopsy revealed that his cause of death was smoke inhalation and severe burns. The two men who were seriously injured in the accident went into the affected area to try and save their coworker. They are also being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The explosion also caused a fire that resulted in significant property damage at the recycling facility. The OSHA will look into the accident to ascertain whether or not the recycling plant was following all safety regulations at the time of the worker death.

A memorial service was held for Atkinson by his sister, father and fiancée. He was an Army veteran as well as a volunteer firefighter in German Township in Indiana.
