The Peoria Journal Star reports that a construction site explosion sent one PIPCO Construction worker to hospital and scattered debris across the site. The workers were constructing the St. Francis and Children's Hospital Milestone addition, which is set to be completed next year. Investigators believe that pressurized air was shot through a pipe a few minutes after 2 p.m. on March 16, causing about $30,000 in damage and injuring one.
The construction site accident occurred as the worker was operating a ground compactor near a 30-inch pipe test. When a joint in the pipe broke, a rush of air sent dirt, rocks, and debris flying over three levels of the construction site. The injured construction worker, 53-year-old Ed Grebner of Washburn, Illinois, was brought to the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center emergency room suffering from facial lacerations as well as general pain.
The construction site manager, Bill Gregor, insists that the incident did not involve an explosion, but simply a release of pressurized air that scattered gravel. The incident is not expected to delay the project.
Property damage to the curtain wall panels made up the majority of the cost of the incident, although several construction vehicle windshields were also cracked or shattered during the construction accident. The broken pipe will also need replacing. Although a number of cars in a nearby parking lot were covered with construction accident gravel and debris, they do not appear to be damaged.
Grebner is expected to make a full recovery, although the on-the-job accident may leave permanent facial scarring.
