Pickup Hits Buggy; Man and horse killed

FLORA, Ind. -- The Old Brethren community in Carroll County is mourning the death of Steven Royer. A 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck smashed into the back of a horse and buggy on a northern Indiana highway, killing the driver and the animal.

The buggy driver, Steven L. Royer, 64, of Camden, was thrown from the buggy and killed when the accident happened about noon Monday, April 27, 2009, on Indiana 75 near Carroll County Road 250 North.

Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy John Chapman said the truck's driver, John T. Justice, 87, of rural Logansport, said he didn't see the buggy as he came up behind it and struck it in the rear

The collision thre Mr. Royer from the buggy. Royer died of massive internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple blunt force trauma. The horse also died. Justice was not injured.
