Police identify the truck that lost tire and caused deadly I-65 accident

Posted on Sep 30, 2008

Last Thursday's report of a tragic I-65 accident that left two people dead was said to have possibly been caused by an errant tire that was lost by a truck traveling on I-65.  Until today, investigators were unsure of the trucks whereabouts, or the details regarding the vehicle owner.

Indiana State Police have now determined that the truck in question was a semi-trailer owned by Millis Transfer.  Millis Transfer is believe to be located in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.

It is believed by investigators that the right side tandem of the Millis Transfer vehicle became separated from the semi, thus causing a wheel to spring loose.  A FedEx semi truck was unable to avoid the loose tire, struck it, and lost control of his vehicle.  The second of two trailers being hauled by the FedEx driver then came apart and crossed over the median striking three northbound vehicles.

One of the vehicles involved in the accident was carrying Indiana residents Vania Shields, 33, and Charles Gould III, 28.  Both were killed in the accident.

Two additional victims were said to have suffered minor injuries in this accident.  The FedEx truck's driver, Michael Sumner, of Seymour, Indiana was also reported to have suffered minor injuries.
