Police suspect drugs in crash that killed two

Posted on Jan 05, 2009

BROOKSTON -- Shattered glass, a pink and purple sock and a pair of latex gloves marked the scene Sunday of a car crash that killed two people and injured three Saturday, January 3, 2009.

Just before 9:53 p.m. a silver Chevy Impala carrying five people was traveling north on White County Road 300 East just north of County Road 1250 South faster than the 55 mph speed limit, according to police, when it drove up a hill. As the vehicle came down the hill it shot to the left side of the road, crashing into a tree and finally coming to rest in a ditch about 15 feet below the road.

Battle Ground resident Kimberly Hittle, 18, and Matthew Ostheimer, 19, of Brookston were killed in the crash.

Brookston resident Travis Mills, 18, was listed in critical condition Sunday night at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The driver of the vehicle was an Indianapolis resident Chad Hooker, 19. He was taken to Home Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

An unidentified 17-year-old female who lives in Battle Ground was also taken to Home Hospital where she was in stable condition early Sunday.

Even though officials didn't suspect alcohol to be a factor in the crash, they did say drugs were a contributing fact in the accident. Confirmation of tests is pending

Hooker and Ostheimer were in the front seat and believed to be wearing seat belts. However, ivestigating officers didn't believe the back three passengers were wearing seat belts.

Bousche Mcatee, 19, and Corey Haynes, 20, were friends with the five people who were in the vehicle.  The visited the crash site on Sunday.

It's terrible," McAtee said. "I never would've thought it would've happened to my friends."

Haynes said kids call that section of County Road 300 East roller coaster road because cars can easily get airborne by speeding over two hills in that area.

Haynes said he saw the car after it was pulled from the ditch.

"(It's) got four tires standing and it's completely smashed, a big silver ball," Haynes said. "When I saw it, I lost it. You look at that car and you say, 'how are any of these people alive?' "
