Ramp Confusion causes Man's death in I-65 crash

Posted on Nov 10, 2008

Whitestown — John Hahn, 53, Joliet, Ill., drove his Chevrolet Cobalt into a semi-truck early Friday morning, November 7, 2008, dying instantly. An eyewitness reported that Hahn was going the wrong way on Northbound Interstate 65 from Indiana 267. Hahn swerved to miss one semi and struck the other, Boone County Deputy Sheriff Chris Burcham said. There was no evidence of alcohol or drugs in the compact car.

Terry Leonard, 45, Axton, Va., driver of the Kenworth semi-tractor, was not injured.

Alex Hine was on his way to work when Hahn "whipped out" in front of him from County Road 400 East onto the wrong ramp.

Hahn had been stopped at the parking lot of the Boone’s Pond State Fishing Area when he "just peeled out in front of me," Hine said.

"It fishtailed around the corner and then turned the wrong way down the off-ramp," Hine said. "He turned his blinker on and everything — even when merging onto the highway. "He must have thought he was going the right way."

Hine pulled off the road to call 911. By the time the operator answered, Hahn had driven head-on into a semi-tractor.

"He immediately veered to the right side, to the median, maybe realizing what had happened," Hine said. "There wasn’t really anything I could do. He was going so fast."

I-65 was closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation.
