Whether or not you believe that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan should have happened, we as Americans can all agree that taking care of the physical and mental health of our soldiers who served in the two wars in an absolute necessity. However, the costs of ongoing care for our returning veterans may be significantly more than lawmakers and experts initially estimated. Now, politicians across the country want to make certain that the money that the Veteran’s Administration needs to serve our veterans is available in years to come.
A recent study by Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz, of Columbia University, and Linda Bilmes, of Harvard University, shows that the health care costs of veterans returning for Iraq and Afghanistan could to $934 billion – including mental health support, physical health support, and ongoing Social Security support for permanently disabled soldiers. This amount – which the study says could be as low as $589 million – is 30 percent higher than estimates at the beginning of the recent overseas conflicts.
All in all 600,000 of the over 2 million veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan have already sought help from the Department of Veteran Affairs. That number should only increase as more soldiers return and as all of the soldiers age.
Currently, Representative Bob Filner, a California democrat, is working towards setting up a trust fund for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs that would ensure that the money we need to care for our veterans is there when we need it in the future.
