Sante Fe, New Mexico – A crash in Santa Fe Wednesday night threatened the safety of four New Mexico teens. But statistics indicate that young travelers are actually safer on the road.
The Santa Fe Police Department reports that a Dodge neon collided with a sport-utility vehicle. Three teenage passengers of the Neon had to be cut from the wreckage using extrication tools and were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The fourth victim, reportedly in his 20s, was listed in stable condition.
A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that fewer teens are involved in car accidents. In fact, the number of 16- and 17-year-old travelers involved in crashes fell 38 percent from 2004 to 2008. Overall, the CDC reports, 9,644 drivers aged 16 or 17 were parties in fatal accidents over the same time period.
Santa Fe has seen its share of teen driving tragedy. In early 2009, four teens died after being struck by a drunken driver.
The young people of New Mexico depend on every motorist on the road to drive safely, in order to ensure their safety and their future.
