In the wake of the urgent warning regarding Oral Sodium Phosphate products , including Visicol and OsmoPrep, and Fleet Phospho-soda , doctors and scientific researchers are looking for new, effective, and safe ways for patients to prep for their colonoscopies. This was clear at the 74th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology where a number of gastroenterology researchers shared their papers and studies on new ways to prepare patient bowels in the time before colon procedures take place.
Oral sodium phosphate , such as found in the laxative product Fleet Phospho-soda, came under fire eight months ago after a number of patients reported serious kidney damage after developing acute phosphate nephropathy. In December of 2008, the Food & Drug Administration required all oral sodium phosphate products to include a black box warning to patients regarding the dangers of serious kidney damage . The product may deposit sodium phosphate crystals in the renal tubules of the kidney, permanently damaging the organ. Acute phosphate nephropathy can lead to kidney damage, kidney failure, the need for a kidney transplant, and even death.
While one study at the Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology found that polyethylene glycol (PEG) with absorbic acid was a good substitute for bowel prep, another study found that oral sulfate solutions worked as well in bowel prep, perhaps with fewer patient side effects.
The makers of Fleet Phospho-soda as well as other oral sodium phosphate have faced multiple lawsuits in recent years regarding the danger of their products.
