Saline High School graduate hospitalized after crash near Holland

Ryan Sheets, a 2004 graduate of Saline High School, is in serious condition at University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center after a car crash Friday in Holland, where Sheets is finishing his undergraduate degree at Hope College.

Sheets' GMC Jimmy was struck by a transit van that had failed to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign.

According to a report from the Holland Police Department, the impact caused Sheets' SUV to strike a parked car and roll over. Sheets was ejected from the vehicle and pinned underneath it until a nearby officer and three citizens were able to push the vehicle aside.

Sheets was initially treated at Holland Community Hospital and later flown to Ann Arbor.

Jimmy’s mother, Marilyn Sheets, said her son remains in a medically-induced coma with brain injuries, a broken clavicle and a few broken ribs. She said he is speaking and moving all four extremities when the sedation is decreased, and is responding well.

The family has set up a Web site at http://www.carepages.com/ for updates and communication about Ryan Sheets' condition
