Scottsburg Families Settles Car Accident Case With State Of Indiana

Posted on Sep 30, 2011

Two families have found a little more piece after a fatal Indiana accident that took the lives of two Scottsburg teens and one exchange student in 2007. The wrongful death trial that was taking place in Scott County was stopped suddenly this week as the accident victim’s families and the state of Indiana were finally able to settle the matter out of court.

Four years ago, 18-year-old Floyd Central High School students Cory Emerson and Tim Brunmeier, along with exchange student 19-year-old Juliane Kraus, were at the intersection of Indiana 356 and U.S. 31 in Scott County when they stuck another car. All three died in the crash, which the families blamed on the highly confusing nature of the intersection. An investigation revealed that the car was actually traveling under the speed limit at the time of the crash.

As part of the car accident settlement, the Indiana Department of Transportation will install flashing signal lights at the spot of the wreck in hopes of fixing the issue that caused such a loss of life. The parents of the children said that the move was a small piece of good to come out of so much sadness. The families are also receiving an undisclosed amount of compensation from the state, which one family said would largely be going toward a scholarship fund.
