Semi/auto fatal crash closes M-115

CADILLAC - A fatal crash occurred on M-115 Wednesday afternoon, February 25, 2009, just south of 48 Road in Clam Lake Township. The crash closed a section of M-115 for several hours.

A northwest-bound vehicle driven by Thomas R. Moffit, 54, of Tustin man crossed the center line and was struck by an eastbound semi-truck driven by Robert K. White, 42, from Delta, Ohio.

Moffit was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Moffit lost control of his vehicle due to road conditions and crossed the center line. White attempted to swerve out of the way but was unsuccessful. The semi-truck struck the passenger side of Moffit’s car, causing severe damage.

Prior to the incident, rain in the area had turned to freezing rain and then snow.

The fuel tank of the 18-wheeler was punctured during the crash. Police closed a section of M-115 for several hours to deal with the cleanup of the crash.
